Avalanche Lake Hike, Glacier National Park West: Again, I was not only scrambling for lodging during our roll I didn't have to time to plan activities. We lucked out in Spokane because of Ann and Chris we got a great hike as well a great ride in the forest. But here in Glacier we were bummed because the Going to the Sun shuttle would not start until the 15 mile road to the summit was cleared and there was a late snow. I so wanted to go. Being a resourceful bunch, we checked in with the ranger stations and found out that we could actually drive to the base of the mountain where the Going To The Sun road started and there was a great RT 5 mile hike to a lake. Let's do it was the cheer from my two traveling companions. What a great hike. We counted 10 waterfalls at the apex of the trail across a vast lake reflecting the giant mountains behind it. It was one of the better hike and rewards that we've been on in our travels. Reminded us of the Tetons.
I almost forgot to mention an interesting fact. You'll notice as we hike up the trail that a lot of trees had fallen and maybe you'll notice that most are facing the same way. The story is the wind from a giant avalanche across the valley last year created the havok you're seeing. We won't underestimate the power of Mother Nature will we?
Speaking of a force of nature, that's 84 year old Mary who hikes the trail several times a year, basically by herself. She lives nearby. Pat and I had a nice convesation with her as we hiked down the tail. Bright, spunky gal.
