South Jetty Beach, Florence, OR: Guess what, I found more sand and dunes...and THE OCEAN. After a 8 mile morning bike ride around Woahink Lake I asked a ranger if he knew where I could find a beach. I told him I was from Hawaii and I was going through withdrawals. He said I would have to leave the park and ride about 5 miles to South Jetty Beach. I would still have to negotiate a sand dune but there should be an ocean on the other side. I rode my bike the 5 miles, climbed the sand dune and lo and behold, he was right. Pacific Blue. Yes, there were a bunch of ATV, south scrambling on the beach and riding up the dunes. Sand Sliding is also way popular all along the coast as well. You can rent boards if you don't happen to carry one with you. They're like Snowboards, with strap ons.
BTW, the amount of ATVs was insane. They filled the park's multiple parking lots, it was like a convention of all terrrain vehicles, each with their orange flagged antenna dancing upright in the wind. In small groups they swarmed the dunes all along the coast for miles and miles. This is what costal Oregonians do in dune country, ride the dunes.
I walked the beach a bit and got a little closer look at the ATVer's and saw that one bunch was a family out for a day at the beach with a little 7-8 year old girl and her older brother driving their vehicles up and down the dunes. She was in complete control and not afraid to gun her engine and charge the sandy hills. They were having a blast.
